When Members Teach Members

Belmont CC capitalized on growing interest in mahjong by creating an accessible social experience that appealed to members of varying ages and skill levels.

By Isabelle Gustafson | July 9, 2026

Mahjong’s not new, but its popularity has surged in recent years, and Belmont (Mass.) Country Club was quick to embrace the trend.

The game, believed to have originated in China during the 19th century, first gained widespread popularity in the United States during the 1920s. More than a century later, it is experiencing a resurgence among players of all ages.

Last year, Belmont CC hosted its first Intro to Mahjong event, which quickly became one of the club’s most talked-about new social experiences.

With a professional mahjong instructor among the club’s membership, the club offered a series of instructional evenings for members of all ages and experience levels. The sessions provided a relaxed way to learn the game while meeting new people and building connections.

The format encouraged conversation and gave members an opportunity to learn something new. It also highlighted how members’ own talents and expertise can help shape club programming, creating experiences that feel authentic to the club’s culture and community.

“There has been a ton of interest in the game following the event,” says Belmont CC Director of Communications and Membership Kate Mason-Carl.

Members have since started organizing their own games before and after lunch in the club’s Grille Room, extending the social connections formed during the introduc-
tory sessions.

“We’re also planning a nighttime mahjong party because of all the interest,” adds Mason-Carl.
