Pending permitting approvals, the Independence, Minn. club would build on a 125.6-acre tract of land composed of rolling farmland, forests and wetlands. Jonathan Abbott, Director of Operations and Membership at the club, says the course will resemble the style of the early 20th century golf courses designed by Alister MacKenzie and Seth Raynor.
Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn. is hoping to add another 18-hole course by 2024, the Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal reported. In a filing with the city of Independence, the club laid out plans to build the course north of its existing course.
The Windsong Farm Golf Club North Course Project is pending permitting approvals, the Business Journal reported. If approved, the course will be located on a 125.6-acre tract of land composed of rolling farmland, forests and wetlands, according to the filing with the city.
The proposal comes from Fox Lake, an LLC that owns the Windsong Farms property, the Business Journal reported. Fox Lake also owns parcels north of the current golf course.
Along with course, the project will also have an irrigation pond and several supporting structures, including a starter building, a maintenance building and a satellite restroom, per the filing with the city, the Business Journal reported. Construction is expected to take two years, beginning in the coming months, and continuing in phased steps until spring 2024.
Jonathan Abbott, Director of Operations and Membership at the club, said the course will resemble the style of the early 20th century golf courses designed by Alister MacKenzie, who helped design Augusta National, and Seth Raynor, the Business Journal reported. The club’s current course was partially designed by PGA Tour pro Tom Lehman.
“[The course] will be a totally different flavor for our members and a good challenge on its own,” Abbott said.
Just over a decade ago, Windsong Golf Club was on the verge of shutting down, but Fargo, N.D., businessman David Meyer ended up buying the club, which originally opened in 2003, the Business Journal reported. Abbott said membership at the club is full and membership fees have increased in the last year, but he would not comment on specific figures.
Abbott would not comment on whether the course is part of a plan to expand membership, the Business Journal reported. At the same time, Abbott said conversations about clubhouse renovations are being discussed.
The course that exists at Windsong Farms plays more than 7,500 yards from the championship tees, the Business Journal reported. C+RB reported in 2015 that the club was embarking on a renovation of that layout.
