Westview Golf Course, Quincy, Ill., has received certification in Environmental Planning from the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses.
“It’s the right thing to do, to take care of the environment,” said Matt Burry, Director of Golf for the Quincy Park District, which oversees the operation at Westview.
The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses (ACSP) provides an advisory service to help existing golf courses develop effective conservation and wildlife enhancement programs. The worldwide effort is coordinated by Audubon International and is sponsored in part by the United States Golf Association.
Burry said the entire certification process involves the completion of six stages of requirements by the course in question. The certification Westview has received was for the first stage, which saw three-quarters of an acre set aside and developed with specific types of plant life to help attract species such as hummingbirds and butterflies. An overall assessment of the grounds was also part of the first stage.
Future stages will involve wildlife habitat management, reduction of chemicals used on the course, water conservation and outreach education.
