Watermark, which owns several private country clubs in Western Michigan, will take over the Grand Rapids, Mich., property effective January 1, 2017. Thornapple Pointe will continue to operate as a public course and its banquet facility will be maintained for public use.
Watermark Properties, which owns several golf and country club properties in Western Michigan, has said it will take over ownership of The Golf Club at Thorn apple Pointe in Grand Rapids, Mich., the Grand Rapids Business Journal reported. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Transfer of ownership will be effective January 1, 2017.
Thornapple Pointe will continue to operate as a public course and have no effect on Watermark’s private memberships or course options, the Journal reported.
The club also will maintain the Thornapple Pointe banquet facility for public use. Watermark has created a separate business to manage Thornapple Pointe’s golf and banquet activities, the Journal reported.
No changes are currently expected at Thornapple Pointe, with Chris Sobieck remaining as General Manager and PGA Professional, the Journal reported.
“This just reinforces Watermark’s commitment to golf in our community and offers an opportunity to expand its reputation,” Sobieck said. “The addition of Thornapple Pointe to the Watermark portfolio only helps strengthen their commitment to see golf continue to grow and thrive in West Michigan.
“We have an outstanding public facility at Thornapple Pointe with great conditions and a solid team running our operations,” Sobieck added. “Nothing will be changing as we make the transition to new ownership. At Thornapple Pointe it will be business as usual in 2017, and we are very excited about the future.”
With an 18-hole golf course designed by Bill Newcomb, The Golf Club at Thornapple Pointe was built in 1997, overlooking the Thornapple River.
Watermark owns Sunnybrook Country Club (Grandville, Mich.), StoneWater Country Club (Caldenia, Mich.) and Thousand Oaks Country Club and Watermark Country Club in Grand Rapids, and offers one membership for access to the four private clubs through a “One Membership, Four Great Clubs” program.
Watermark’s portfolio also includes the RedWater Restaurant Group, which operates a variety of restaurants including Gravity Taphouse Grille, Rush Creek Bistro, Fire Rock Grille, Cork Wine & Grille, Vintage Prime & Seafood and Reds at Thousand Oaks.
