Bust out a lurid Hawaiian shirt and order up a color-coordinated umbrella drink—because a little bit of Key West is coming to Fitchburg, Mass. Or so assert the folks who are bringing a CoCo Key Water Resort to central Massachusetts.
A grand opening for what is billed as “a tropical aquarium for people,” with a Key West theme, is scheduled for later this month at Fitchburg’s Royal Plaza Hotel, the venue of the new indoor water resort. The 55,000-sq.-ft. water resort features three water slides (including the Pelican Plunge), spaces for birthday parties, and the Wet Rooster Bar.
According to the Philadelphia Business Journal, Coco Key is a joint venture between Sage Hospitality Resources of Denver and Wave Development LLC of Milwaukee that aims to help hotels boost their revenues. The Fitchburg CoCo Key Water Resort will be the 10th such facility opened in the United States by the Sage/Wave joint venture.
The growth of water parks, both as stand-alone, year-round resorts, and within existing club and resort settings, is featured in C&RB’s December 2008 issue (“Thrills, Chills and a Few Spills”).
