The Lambert’s Point Golf Course in Norfolk, Va. is closing at the end of 2022 and will be replaced by a sustainable water project from the Hampton Roads Sanitation District, WAVY reported.
The HRSD recently bought the site from the city for a total of $30 million and will take ownership on Jan. 1.
Norfolk says the district’s Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow (SWIFT) project is “designed to enhance the groundwater supply and help address environmental concerns such as sea level rise,” WAVY reported.
SWIFT takes highly treated wastewater that would otherwise go into the Elizabeth River and runs it through additional treatments to meet drinking water standards. That water then goes into the Potomac Aquifer, eastern Virginia’s primary groundwater source.
The 9-hole Lambert’s Point golf course has been operating on the Elizabeth River waterfront for nearly two decades, WAVY reported. Golfers though can still play at the 18-hole Ocean View Golf Course or the Sewell’s Point Golf Course.
Negotiations continue to sell the Emporia (Kan.) Country Club. The country club board held a meeting Dec. 20 and continued conversations about selling the property to an ownership group led by Emporia businessman Skip Evans, KVOE reported. Country Club Board President Steve Neill says the sale could close early next year.
All other official details are pending, including sale price, future focus of the property and upcoming decisions on employees. Evans has not returned calls from KVOE News seeking information and comment.
The country club’s original golf course was finished in 1915 after the charter was approved in 1911 and the clubhouse was built in 1912.
