Garry Higgins, who served as the Old Orange golf course’s superintendent since 2012, died July 19 of complications stemming from an accident that happened at the Fort Myers, Fla., property two weeks earlier. Details about what caused the injuries were unavailable.
The superintendent of a golf course at Verandah Club in Fort Myers, Fla., died July 19 after succumbing to injuries from an accident that happened at the golf course two weeks earlier, the Fort Myers-based News-Press reported.
Garry Higgins maintained the turf of the Old Orange golf course at Verandah, a private golf course community south of Fort Myers Shores, since January 2012, according to an e-mail sent out by General Manager J.R. Congdon, the News-Press reported.
“The morning of July 5th, while getting the golf courses prepared for play, Garry was involved in what at the time was thought to be a non-life threatening accident,” Congdon wrote. “But within a few days of the accident complications related to the injury began to develop and eventually Garry succumbed to those complications, passing yesterday July 19th.”
A Facebook post by the Calusa Golf Course Superintendents Association on July 14, before the death, reads: “Higgins suffered a severe accident while at work. He is out of surgery where he lost his entire right leg and the next 48 to 72 hours are critical.”
The post continued on saying that Higgins was in Southwest Florida’s golf maintenance industry for more than 25 years and that he was being treated at Gulf Coast Hospital in Fort Myers, the News-Press reported.
Congdon wrote that Higgins, originally from Iowa, once served as the golf course’s interim director of agronomy. “He loved working with his crew and he enjoyed the relationships that he had developed with many of the members,” Congdon wrote. “But his true love was his family.”
Higgins leaves behind a wife along with a daughter they had together, two grandchildren, three brothers, two sisters and his father, the News-Press reported.
Congdon ended his with e-mail with: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Garry’s family during this very difficult time.”
