Almost three-dozen golf carts went up in flames at Wheeling (W. Va.) Country Club on July 24 at around 4:30 in the morning.
Golf professional Thomas Lindh told Fox News that a motorist spotted flames at the course and called the fire department. Crews arrived to find the carts, linked by a cable, in ruins.
Ohio County Sheriff Pat Bulter told WTOV Stuebenville that an arsonist is responsible for destroying the carts and causing thousands of dollars of damages. Butler added that someone drove donuts on a fairway with a truck and damaged a fence during their escape. The flames also burnt a nearby hillside and destroyed swimming pool furniture.
Lindh estimates the damages at around $150,000.
The state fire marshal has been called in to help in the investigation. Arson investigators are offering up to a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
