Police are looking for someone operating a motorcycle or four-wheel side-by-side vehicle who turned doughnuts and dug massive cuts into the 11th green at the Prestonsburg, Ky., course the night of July 20. In addition to the estimated $20,000 in damage to the green, the General Manager expects to lose $10,000 in revenue as the green is repaired.
A round of golf at StoneCrest Golf Course will be one hole short, following late-night vandalism to one of the greens at the Prestonsburg, Ky., course last weekend, the Prestonsburg (Ky.) Floyd County Times reported.
Police are looking for someone operating a motorcycle or four-wheel side-by-side vehicle who turned doughnuts and dug massive cuts into the 11th green the night of July 20, the Times reported.
Morris Copley, manager, said the damage to the green is estimated at $20,000, while the course also expects to lose $10,000 in revenue, the Times reported.
“We’ll be discounting rounds of golf by $5 to $8, depending on whether it’s a weekday or weekend rate,” Copley said.
Copley is guardedly optimistic that the hole will only be closed for three to four weeks, but admits that late July and early August are the worst times of year to be repairing greens, the Times reported.
The vandalism occurred during a field party for the Brotherhood of the Wheel motorcycle club, but law enforcement officials are not blaming the group or its members, stating that it appears some people who were not members got into the event without going through the main gate, and were later asked to leave, the Times reported.
“We have a couple of suspects that are not associated with them in any way,” said Prestonsburg Police Chief Mike Ormerod.
The vandalism will hurt the course significantly over the next two months, Copley said.
“We’re having a high school invitational tournament on August 10. It’s going to affect that, but there is nothing that can be done about it. There will be 100 kids coming from all over the state to play our golf course, and they’re going to play 17 holes. It’s a shame.”
No arrests have yet been made, the Times reported.
