“How He Played the Game,” by John Riley, tells the story of Ed “Porky” Oliver, a professional golfer who won eight PGA Tour events in the 1940s and 1950s.
He served in the U.S. Army during World. War II, and is part of a generation of golfers who made it through the Great Depression, served in World War II and returned home to build the modern golf tour. Oliver competed against some of the game’s greats, including Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead.
Oliver finished second in three major championships: theĀ 1946 PGA Championship, the 1952 U.S. Open and the 1953 Masters. Overall, he had seven top 10 finishes in major championships and was a member of three Ryder Cup teams (1947, 1951 and 1955).
The book was the first place winner in the National Federation of Press Women’s Nonfiction: Biography or History category.
