(Diamond Bar GC)
Diamond Bar (Calif.) GC will have six holes of its William Bell-designed course reconfigured to allow some of its property to be used for new ramps, interchanges and bypass lanes, to help alleviate congestion and collisions caused by the confluence of two freeways that has created the worst trucking bottleneck in the state. In Sacramento, Campus Commons GC has been closed through 2023 while erosion-protection measures are made along the American River. Golfers have been promised improved course conditions from both projects.
Diamond Bar(Calif.) Golf Course started an 18-month closure on September 1st, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune of Monrovia, Calif., as nearly 10 acres of the property will be reconfigured for a project aimed at fixing the worst trucking bottleneck in the state.
Six holes of the Diamond Bar course, which was designed by William F. Bell, that run along two major freeways will be redesigned into an 18-hole layout with improved fairways and greens while maintaining the current course par and yardage, the Valley Tribune reported. Other course improvements will include new tees and sand traps, a new maintenance facility and irrigation system.
“Diamond Bar Golf Course is considered one of the best-quality courses in the area and has been a tremendous asset to the community since 1963,” said Diamond Bar Mayor Nancy Lyons, who chairs the council’s Capital Projects and Construction Committee.
“These improvements will take the golfing experience to a new level by providing additional character and variety, making it an even more attractive and challenging course when it welcomes golfers back in early 2023,” Lyons added.
The course changes will allow for freeway improvements that will begin in 2022 that will include ramp and interchange reconfigurations and the addition of auxiliary collector/distributor and bypass lanes designed to reduce traffic weaving, congestion and collisions in a 2.5-mile confluence zone where the California 57 and 60 freeways meet, the Valley Tribune reported.
The often-clogged interchange is used by more than 350,000 motorists per day, is among the most traveled freight corridors in the country, and is ranked No. 1 on the West Coast and No. 11 in the country for truck delays, the Valley Tribune reported.
The San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments will oversee the project in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
In Sacramento, Calif., the Campus Commons Golf Course, owned and managed by the Sacramento County Golf Division of Regional Parks, has been temporarily closed through December 31st, 2023, while erosion-protection measures are put in place along the American River.
Those measures must be put in place because of the significant risk of erosion along the riverbank that must be addressed to protect the levees and preserve the berm on which the Campus Commons Golf Course rests, the county said.
The improvements will be constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in collaboration with the California Department of Water Resources, Central Valley Flood Protection Board, and Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency.
The construction may also cause a temporary inconvenience for recreational users, but the community will end up with safer levees, reduced flood risk and a complete restoration of the golf course that will include new greens, tee boxes, turf, irrigation systems and layout, the county said.
“To all of our friends and families who have been loyal players and users of our golf course throughout the years, we appreciate your patronage and thank you for your patience during this temporary closure,” said Greg Bliek, Golf Division Manager, in a statement about the closing. “We expect to be back open in 2024 with an improved and refurbished course for the community to enjoy.”
Campus Commons Golf Course Gift Card or coupon holders were told to contact the for instructions on how to redeem them at another area Sacramento County golf course.
