The Tuscaloosa, Ala. property will now serve as a training and education center for students in the university’s Restaurant, Hotel and Meetings Management Program.
NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa, Ala., will now serve as a training and education center for college students, as Troon/Honours Golf will work closely with The University of Alabama’s Restaurant, Hotel, and Meetings Management Program to develop future golf and hospitality industry leaders.
Troon has led a partnership to acquire NorthRiver Yacht Club, a private club located on the banks of Lake Tuscaloosa, through Honours Golf, a division of Troon that has managed NorthRiver since 2012. C&RB reported on Honours’ acquisition of the club last year (http://clubandresortbusiness.com/2016/09/northriver-yc-sold-management-company/).
“NorthRiver is a tremendous multi-amenity facility that will allow us to develop and train students from The University of Alabama’s hospitality program in a variety of disciplines,” said Dana Garmany, Troon’s Chairman and CEO. “Members and guests of NorthRiver will continue to experience the same incredible service, playing conditions and amenities that they have all along.”
“The Hospitality Management program at The University of Alabama welcomes the opportunity to partner with Troon, Dana Garmany [a University of Alabama hospitality program graduate] and NorthRiver Yacht Club,” said Dr. Milla Boschung, Dean of the College of Human Environmental Sciences. “Being nationally recognized, the hospitality program will work closely with Troon and NorthRiver to place students for internships in club management operations and provide professional support to continue to make NorthRiver a premiere golf destination and launching pad for many future golf and hospitality careers.”
NorthRiver Yacht Club’s 18-hole, par-71 golf course was originally designed by Gary Player in 1978 and re-designed by Bob Cupp in 1999. In 2015, Cupp oversaw the complete re-design and renovation of NorthRiver. The club also maintains a practice facility, two practice greens, a “wee links” mini-course, short-game area and teaching center.
“We continue to see tremendous global growth in the club and hospitality industry,” said Bob Barrett, Chief Executive Officer of Honours Golf. “With its location just down the road from The University of Alabama, NorthRiver presents an excellent training ground to grow well-qualified individuals to work at facilities that Troon manages around the world.”
The NorthRiver Tennis Center boasts 11 tennis courts, including four hydro-clay, four traditional har-tru, two hard courts and one red-clay court for a variety of play. The club’s ennis program offers programming to members of all levels of interest and skill.
Other amenities at NorthRiver Yacht Club include:
- A Fitness Center with a massage therapist, indoor/outdoor heated pool, and 50-meter Olympic-sized pool with full cabana service
- A 76-slip marina on Lake Tuscaloosa
- Lakeside dining and special-event area at “The Captain’s Cabin”
- A choice of fine dining in the main clubhouse overlooking the 18th hole of the golf course, or a more casual dining experience in The Grille at NorthRiver
