The private club in Pleasanton, Calif., outside of San Jose, has over 1,100 members, a unionized workforce, and a history dating to 1886. Amenities include 36 holes of golf and a Bocce Complex that attracts 380 regular league players.

 

Castlewood Country Club, a private club located in Pleasanton, Calif., just outside of San Jose, has selected Troon to be its management firm.

With a history dating to 1886 and a location above the Livermore Valley, Castlewood CC currently has 1,120 members and a property that features 36 holes of golf, including the Hill Course, designed by William P. Bell in 1926, and the Valley Course, built 28 years later in 1954.

Other amenities include a pool with active programs that include swim and water polo teams, and a tennis complex with leagues for women, men and juniors. The club’s Bocce Complex has also become a social hub for members; the club coordinates two eight- week seasons with five leagues and approximately 380 players. Castlewood also has a fully outfitted fitness center and several dining venues, including fine-dining in the Hacienda dining room and casual dining in the Grille.

As detailed in the October 2015 cover story of C&RB’s Chef to Chef supplement (http://clubandresortbusiness.com/2015/10/08/a-perfect-union/), Castlewood has a unionized foodservice workforce and was the scene, beginning in 2010, of a highly publicized labor dispute that led to a protracted lockout of more than 60 of the club’s employees. A settlement was reached in 2013 and the club’s $4.5 million annual food-and-beverage operation is now directed by a culinary team led by F&B Director Giacomo Stoltz and Executive Chef Thayer Johnson.
