The Rio Mar property in Puerto Rico is adjacent to the El Yunque rainforest and has two courses designed by Greg Norman and Tom and George Fazio. The contract with Golf Club Pfalz is Troon’s first in Germany.
Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Troon has been selected to manage the operations of Rio Mar Country Club in Puerto Rico. Rio Mar CC is adjacent to the El Yunque rainforest, which covers an area of 29,000 acres and forms part of the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa.
Rio Mar CC, a former host of the World Amateur Team Championship, offers 36 holes of championship golf with two distinct course designs. The Ocean Course, a design collaboration between Tom and George Fazio, provides players with a tour of the island’s natural contours and features a signature 16th hole along the Atlantic Ocean. The River Course features a more recent Greg Norman design.
In addition to managing the golf operations at Rio Mar, Troon will also oversee operations at its tennis facility, which features eleven Har-Tru® courts and two Laykold hard courts.
The addition of Rio Mar CC expands Troon’s presence on Puerto Rico, which includes the Bahia Beach Resort & Golf Club at The St Regis Bahia Beach Resort.
“We are delighted to be able to announce that Troon will manage Rio Mar Country Club moving forward,” commented Mark Kukulski, President of the Wyndham Hotels Group. “We feel that this appointment will bring incredible value to the membership, as well as drive the golf travel rounds and revenues that this facility deserves to be seeing.
“Our existing successful partnership with Troon around the U.S., at facilities such as Stockton Seaview Hotel & Golf Club [Atlantic City, N.J.] and Silverado Resort & Spa [Napa, Calif.], enable us to move forward with confidence,” Kukulski added.
“Puerto Rico has had a long history with world-class golf destinations,” noted John Easterbrook, Troon’s executive vice president, operations. “We are truly honored to continue our presence in Puerto Rico working with Wyndham Hotels & Resorts on the Rio Mar golf facilities. We are excited about the commitment to Rio Mar and Puerto Rico golf from the Wyndham ownership, and look forward to golf being a big part of growth in the area.”
Troon also announced its first contract in Germany, with Golf Club Pfalz in Neustadt. Located in the celebrated “Perle der Pfalz” wine region, between Neustadt and the Cathedral City of Speyer in southwest Germany, Golf Club Pfalz features a course that stretches 6,638 yards through natural woodland and is surrounded by forests and meadows. The course was established in 1970.
Golf Club Pfalz has more than 1,000 members and regularly hosts competitions and tournaments. The 18-hole course is complemented by a clubhouse with a 100-seat dining room and a spacious terrace with views of the closing holes.
“Troon has had a long-standing privileged position in Europe,” said Michael Loeffler, Golf Club Pfalz President. “We wanted to elevate the standards of our course and Troon was the clear choice for us.”
As part of the contract, Troon has been tasked with assisting the Pfalz agronomy team in elevating the golf course’s conditioning. Under the guidance of Simon Doyle, Troon’s Director of Agronomy for Europe, the course and its agronomy team will advance the overall golf presentation, enhancing year-round playability and improving turf conditioning across the board.
