The Road Back: How to Safely Host “Mid-Pandemic” Tournaments and Leagues

By Rob Thomas | July 10, 2020

Green Valley GC in Sioux City, Iowa has successfully hosted four tournaments—including a club championship, a scramble with 136 players and another that attracted out-of-state amateurs—since being allowed to reopen, and has also been running regular league play for 60 players, all while keeping guests and staff safe. “It’s all about the preparation,” says Director of Golf Scott Harmelink, PGA, in describing the extra measures that have been taken, with a particular focus on the check-in process and food-and-beverage service, for this episode of C+RB’s video series. “I’m not trying to be a renegade, but I’d stand up to any challenge that you can’t do this safely—and I think any golf course can,” Harmelink adds.

“The Road Back” video series from Club + Resort Business provides fresh insights into how club and resort properties are meeting the challenges posed by the pandemic and finding new and innovative ways to boost business levels and start their return to full operation.

In this episode, we get insights from Scott Harmelink, PGA, Director of Golf for Green Valley Golf Club in Sioux City, Iowa, which includes the Green Valley and Floyd Park golf courses, on how his property has successfully hosted four tournaments—including a club championship, a scramble with 136 players and another that attracted out-of-state amateurs—and is also running regular league play for 60 players, all while keeping guests and staff safe. “It’s all about the preparation,” Harmelink says in describing the extra measures that have been taken, with a particular focus on the check-in process and food-and-beverage service. “I’m not trying to be a renegade, but I’d stand up to any challenge that you can’t do this safely—and I think any golf course can.”
