The Road Ahead: Racine (Wis.) CC Introduces Ambient Scenting

By Rob Thomas | February 4, 2022

In this episode of C+RB’s video series, Bob Wiegand, Head of Maintenance/Housekeeping at Racine (Wis.) Country Club, discusses an olfactory issue that had been plaguing the historic club for years and how one call changed everything … and introduced them to ambient scenting.

“The Road Ahead” video series from Club + Resort Business highlights how clubs are moving forward to create successful new programs, events and amenities to enhance the member experience.

In this episode, Bob Wiegand, Head of Maintenance/Housekeeping at Racine (Wis.) Country Club, discusses an olfactory issue that had been plaguing the historic club for years and how one call changed everything … and introduced them to ambient scenting.

Racine Country Club has a storied history dating back to 1909. In fact, the original clubhouse is still in use, though has been greatly expanded upon. That nod to the past had presented a problem in the present.

Because the clubhouse was built below street grade, wastewater from the property had to move uphill to get to the city’s sewer lines. What didn’t make it would flow back to the clubhouse and sit … and create an unpleasant odor.

Unhappy with solutions the club had tried and tired of masking the objectionable smell, Bob Wiegand, Head of Maintenance/Housekeeping, called upon Proliitec for a solution. Prolitec helps clubs experience indoor ambient scents that activate a sense of wellness, convey a calming sense of clean, enhance relaxation, or raise energy levels – all without open flames, allergens, or dangerous VOCs.

“There really wasn’t a whole lot to tell … it was flawless,” Wiegand says of the installation process. “They came in they did a scope of measurements on the area that would be covered and what we needed to cover. We put one upstairs and we’ve got the two downstairs and just covers the whole area. As soon as you walk in the front door of the club you smell that. If you were to wander downstairs, it’s a continuous smell. It’s been wonderful.”

What are the members saying?

“It’s not what they say … it’s what they don’t say,” Wiegand says. “They don’t smell that smell anymore and it was very distracting.”
