The Road Ahead: How Leadership Makes a Smooth Transition at Saratoga (Calif.) CC

By Rob Thomas | September 17, 2021

In this episode of C+RB’s video series, Joe Callan and Diana Moffett explain how the staff of Saratoga (Calif.) Country Club worked as a team to usher in a new era of leadership. Callan’s decision to retire after 44 years at the club was made easier by handing over the reins to Moffett, who had served as his Assistant GM for the last 11 years. “Joe has been such a great mentor to me that I knew when he was ready [to retire], I would be ready,” Moffett says.

“The Road Ahead” video series from Club + Resort Business highlights how clubs are moving forward to create successful new programs, events and amenities and enhance the member experience.

This episode highlights how Saratoga (Calif.) Country Club prepared Diana Moffett to take the reins following the retirement of longtime General Manager Joe Callan. Moffett served under Callan for the last 11 years of his 44-year tenure.

For Moffett, Callan’s leadership was terrific preparation for her new role.

“Joe has been such a great mentor to me that I knew when he was ready [to retire] I would be ready,” Moffett says of learning under Callan. “I think the most important is just the fairness and listening. You know, every member’s comment is valid and if you just take those moments, whether they would like tennis courts resurfaced or maybe they just want some extra soap in the bathroom, I think it all is important. I think that you just need to take the time to listen and then, from there, develop what the priorities are and what makes sense.”

As Callan transitioned away from the club, he had to make a conscious effort to let others handle some of his regular duties.

“I did start to let other people do things that I would normally do myself,” Callan says. “I would say that that was kind of hard because you’re kind of used to doing things and it’s hard not to do in some respect.

“I was grateful to have someone who cared deeply about the club to come into that position,” he adds. “So it was really great to have Diana there for that … and the rest of the staff is very dedicated, as well.”
