The Plaquemine La. club opened in 2001 as part of the Audubon Golf Trail, but never drew a profit. Billy Casper Golf was brought aboard in 2017 in hopes of achieving profitability, but the state-mandated closure due to the coronavirus sealed the facility’s fate.
The Island Golf and Country Club in Plaquemine La., announced its permanent closure last week the Plaquemine (La.) Post South reported. The facility never drew a profit, according to Plaquemine Mayor Edwin Reeves, who worked with A. Wilbert & Sons and served as the project coordinators for the club and subdivision. The permanent closure took effect April 1.
“It didn’t make money from the time it opened in 1999,” Reeves said.
The Island was set to continue operation during the spring months—traditionally a busy season—but a state-mandated closure due to the coronavirus sealed the fate for the facility, the Post South reported.
“Spring was our peak season, so when we couldn’t open it, that was the final straw,” he said. “The sad thing is that it was still a state-of-the-art facility … it’s not that we didn’t try.”
Billy Casper Golf Management was brought aboard in 2017 in hopes of achieving profitability, the Post South reported.
“They made some strides, but they failed to meet all the goals,” Reeves said. “Hopefully, someone will pick it up.”
A few inquiries have come through so far, he told the Post South.
The Island consists of a 160-acre Tif-Eagle course with nine man-made lakes on 17 of the 18 holes, the Post South reported. It served as the hosting site for many charity golf tournaments over the last 20 years.
The Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation & Tourism designated The Island as part of the Audubon Golf Trail, along with 17 other area golf clubs, in 2001, the Post South reported. The restaurant at the clubhouse had become a dining spot. It also served as a gathering place for civic clubs, as well as parties, meetings and reunions.
A message on The Island website attributed the closure to “dwindling sales and further hindered by a closure for coronavirus,” the Post South reported. It also said that the goal is “complete divestiture—through sale, transfer or repurpose of The Island to another individual, organization or entity.”
A general inquiry form on the website is available for those interested in acquisition, the Post South reported.
