Horizon City, a suburb of El Paso, has reopened the former Emerald Springs Golf Course after renovations, and seeks to encourage the development of homes around the property as an additional lure to new businesses and residents. The course’s new Moonlight Bar and Grill is already filling up its event schedule without active promotion.
Renovations to the former Emerald Springs Golf Course in Horizon City, Texas, a suburb of El Paso, could mean a boost to the community’s economy, reported television station KFOX-14. The new Horizon Golf and Conference Center reopened its golf course and clubhouse restaurant about a month ago, the station reported, and has already seen positive signs of how it can attract new business and development.
“A good operating golf course is a drawing card for business and residents, so it has to be helpful to the community,” Benny Davis, Board President for the Horizon Regional Municipal Utility District, which owns the property, told KFOX-14.
In addition to the possibility of new businesses coming to Horizon City, the renovations could mean a more promising local housing market, the station reported. “Horizon is continuing to appreciate, which is good. The builders are excited about building out here, and houses are selling,” said John Plummer, a local realtor.
Plummer told KFOX-14 that some homes near the golf course are worth $300,000 to $500,000, but there could be something for everyone in the growing area. “The nice thing about this area is you can go anywhere from $100,000 up, so people do have a choice,” he said.
Some residents told KFOX-14 that they had seen the transformation of the golf course over the past few years, and were worried about the values of their homes when it was out of use. “Everybody thinks about that; what their investment is, and how it’s going to be in the future,” said Bob Maupin, who lives in a townhome on the golf course.
The value of properties in the neighborhood is now “more than we would have ever expected, from where it went down to and where it’s come back up from,” Maupin added. As for the golf course, Maupin said it “still needs a little bit of loving care, but it’s in great shape.”
Nina Pina, owner of the Moonlight Bar and Grill and ballroom on the property, told KFOX-TV that the event schedule for 2014 is already filling up, even though she has yet to do any active promotion for the new facility.
“We’re having weddings on January 3rd, 4th and 31st,” Pina said. “I think for not having done any advertising, we’re doing very well. We already have proms and graduations scheduled [for later in the year], too.”
