The Tecumseh (Mich.) Country Club (TCC) has changed its 61-year policy of being strictly private and is going to operate as a semi-private club, beginning this season. The general public is being offered tee times as well as memberships at reduced rates, according to an article in the Tecumseh Herald.
“We’re like a lot of private clubs in the country that are struggling,” Tecumseh’s Head Golf Professional, Ryan Leitner, told the Herald. “Like any business, if you don’t change your model with the times, you’re going to struggle.”
Michigan basically has an eight-month golf season, Leitner noted, and during the winter months when the course is closed to play, many TCC members are unable to take advantage of the restaurant’s facilities but still must pay monthly dues. During today’s economic downturn, dishing out money to play golf when there is still snow on the ground can be hard to swallow. With that in mind, TCC began offering seasonal memberships at reduced rates this year.
Last year TCC also incorporated some Community Appreciation Days to introduce the course to the public, and it plans to do so again this year, with reduced rates offered to highlight the events.
“We basically showcased the club and tried to pick up new members that way and it was successful,” said Leitner. “We had 100 players on both days.”
