Clubs and resorts are continually seeking new ways to bring new faces to their properties, and one way to do so is through corporate events. At Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., the Adventure Learning Center invites workers out of their offices and unites them in teambuilding events, seminars, workshops and corporate programs.
The center, which has become an “outdoor classroom” for Florida companies including the Florida Farm Bureau, BB&T Bank, Siemens, and more, seeks to mix adventure with learning new individual and group skills, such as trust and collaboration.
“It’s worthy, it’s emotional, it’s physical, it’s outcome-driven, and it’s real,” says participant Stevie Johns of the Florida Virtual School. “I cannot wait until we have the opportunity to have our whole team participate. There are many underlying themes to drive the messages home, and it’s something I will use in my daily role.”
To meet the varying needs (and sizes) of companies, the resort offers multiple teambuilding programs. The High Challenge Course is a day-long ropes course for 15 participants or more that develops communication skills, risk-taking and resilience.
“This demonstrates very clearly how to challenge your own internal thinking, your belief systems and your perceptions, and to show how you have to break through those perceptions to achieve remarkable results, which you do with your team,” says Archie Tews, who oversees the program.
One group exercise, The Airlift, tasks participants with creating multiple “departments” for the development of a safe transport system, using helium balloons, that can lift a team member. “This relates directly to organizations with many different departments or areas that have to work interdependently with each other,” Tews adds.
The resort also offers a Low Challenge Course, Operation Intercept, Indoor Experiential Learning, and custom workshops.
