2016 Excellence in Club Management Award Winners Announced
The 2016 honorees through the prestigious awards co-sponsored by Club & Resort Business and the McMahon Group include Brett Morris of The Polo Club of Boca Raton (Fla.); Raymond Kondziela of The Ivanhoe Club in Mundelein, Ill.; Joseph Furlow of the Academy of Magical Arts in Hollywood, Calif.; and Charles C. Johnson of the Detroit Athletic Club. The winners will be recognized at an Awards Dinner held at Interlachen Country Club in Winter Park, Fla., on February 9.
Winter Park (Fla.) GC to Reopen October 1
What was once a flat course has been renovated to “become one of the rarest nine-hole golf courses in the country,” operators say, now featuring new challenges from sand traps, contours, undulations, and varying elevations, tee boxes moved to aim players’ drives down the fairway and away from roads and moving vehicles, and greens that are now three times larger.
Golf Courses Countrywide Plan Fall Reopenings
Cypress Knoll Golf and Country Club in Palm Coast, Fla., and Mooresville (N.C.) Municipal Golf Course are both on track to reopen in September; Winter Park (Fla.) Golf Course and SunRidge Canyon Golf Club in Fountain Hills, Ariz., will each reopen October 1; Rockwood Park Golf Course in Fort Worth, Texas is scheduled to reopen in late October or early November, unveiling a $4.48 million makeover; and Wanakah Country Club in Hamburg, N.Y., accelerated phase three of its master plan, with the final phase set to begin in 2017.
Volunteers Prepare Winter Park (Fla.) CC&GC for Reopening
The city dedicated $1.2 million to revitalize the nine-hole layout, which has been closed since the beginning of March, with plans to reveal the final product in September. A small group of volunteers and city employees hand-sprigged a few holes this week, and another sprigging event is planned for May 28.
City Plans to Invest in Winter Park (Fla.) CC Renovations
Though funding for the project has not been worked out yet, the city wants to make significant improvements to the club and golf course, estimated to cost up to $1.5 million. The golf task force also recommended adding a second phase to the project to build a training and teaching facility.
