Crenshaw Supports Lions Municipal GC Restoration
Ben Crenshaw, who grew up in Austin, Texas and “incidentally” made his first hole-in-one at the municipal facility, said he wants to see the greens rebuilt, with more bunkers and trees added to the layout. The cost of restoring the course is estimated to be $10-12 million, and Crenshaw said he is convinced the funds could be raised privately.

The University of Texas has informed the city of Austin, Texas that it is willing to explore extending the lease for Lions Municipal Golf Course, one of the first to be integrated in the South. But extending the arrangement past 2019 could become cost-prohibitive for the city if the university seeks to reap full market value, some fear.

The historic site in Austin, Texas became the first in the South to desegregate when Alvin Propps, a 9-year-old black boy who was also a caddie, played a round of golf at the course in either 1950 or 1951. The resolution urges that the property be placed on the National Register of Historic Places, but does not guarantee it.

The Austin (Texas) City Council will vote March 20 on whether to seal the deal on the $9.6 million purchase of the 292-acre property, which is open to the public. The lease of another of the city’s courses, Lions Municipal, will run out in 2019, and could be developed into retail or residential property.
The University of Texas Club Plans Multimillion-Dollar Renovation
The ClubCorp facility, located on The University of Texas campus in Austin, will begin a reinvention project that is scheduled to be complete in late spring. Project highlights include the redesigned Longhorn Bar with casual dining; new Texas Star banquette seating; a media area with a 103-inch big-screen TV; and the Darrell K. Royal Power Boardroom, with HD videoconferencing.
