Florida Golf Courses Reopen to Showcase Renovations
Twin Brooks Golf Course in St. Petersburg has reopened after investing $1.5 million in its 12-hole layout to create bigger greens and fairway mounds, expand the driving range, add golf cart paths and bring in 12 new electric carts. In Naples, LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort has reopened after six months, featuring 18 new greens and newly grassed tee boxes.
Municipal Golf Courses in California Face Closure
Springtown Golf Course in Livermore, Calif., will close in mid-October, after its operator, Sycamore Landscaping, goes out of business. In Modesto, Calif., city officials will discuss whether to close the Modesto Municipal Golf Course as part of an effort to reduce the general fund’s golf subsidy, which is expected to be nearly $783,000 this year.
John Deere Golf, First Tee Set Careers on Course Schedule for 2015
The program, which provides hands-on experience and leadership skills for teenage participants to help them prepare for a career in golf course management, includes “shadowing” opportunities with superintendents around PGA Tour events.

John Deere Displays Golf Commitment
As a national corporate partner of The First Tee, a non-profit youth organization that uses golf as a platform to teach life and leadership skills, John Deere is presenting a multimedia display at eight PGA TOUR events, premiering at this week’s Valero Texas Open. In 2013, Deere announced a $1 million five-year donation to The First Tee.
ClubCorp Charity Classic Raises Record $2.4M
The owner-operator’s 2013 Charity Classic events raised the funds for more than 100 charitable organizations, spanning 125 clubs and nearly 14,000 individual participants. The annual philanthropic efforts showed a 10 percent increase over the previous year’s event total.

Modesto (Calif.) City Council Negotiates with KemperSports
Officials are negotiating a two-year contract with the management company to operate Dryden and Creekside golf courses, both of which were previously managed by the locally based FM Golf. The council plans to have KemperSports managing the two golf courses by the middle of the month.
Highland Lake GC Closes
The 66-acre Flat Rock, N.C., golf club closed permanently today, and will begin its transition into a passive municipal park. Jim Sparks, who owned the nine-hole golf course for 19 years, called the closure the “end of an era.”
The First Tee Establishes Orange County, Calif., Chapter
The nonprofit youth development organization has formally approved the chapter, allowing it to establish programs that will impact the community’s youth through after-school and in-school programs. The chapter will be guided by Teal Guion, who will manage the program with a team of coaches at The Islands Golf Center in Anaheim, Calif.
