Los Angeles is the latest large city to enact a local “ban the box” ordinance that prohibits employers from asking prospective employees about their criminal history when first applying for a job. Employers can perform a background check following a conditional job offer, but they need to have permission and must perform a written analysis if the offer is withdrawn.
