Recreation Centers of Sun City has recently renovated Riverview Golf Course, with updates to Willowbrook and Willowcreek golf courses planned, but some golfers want the renovations to stop, arguing that the golf courses “have not come back to playable condition as fast as was promised.” The group also argues that the renovations have been done in a way that makes them harder to play for seniors and presents a physical hazard.
The project at Willowcreek GC and Willowbrook GC, which is slated to be carried out in 2017, will remove 75 acres of turf on the perimeter of the golf courses, at a total cost of $1.4 million. A similar project will be carried out this year along the perimeter of the city-owned Lakes East Golf Course, where 10 acres of turf will be removed.
A new youth golf program created by Sun City Country Club takes golf’s lessons and brings them to where the kids are: schools.
The Sun City, Ariz., golf course closed in November 2014 for “sweeping” renovations, that included recontouring the greens, replanting grass on the tees and greens, and reorganizing the holes. The property will reopen on November 14, showcasing an enlarged driving range and practice area, upgraded pro and snack shops, expanded patio, and an upgraded irrigation system.
The volunteer-manned program will seek to evaluate start times at the Recreation Centers of Sun City golf courses, and include “time pars” on new scorecards to increase pace of play. Another goal of the program is to reduce infractions of course policy, giving rangers the authority to issue citations for violations that could result in fines and suspension of course use.
