The Environmental Behaviors & Practices survey, conducted by the McMahon Group, found that 85% of private clubs use environmentally safe products on their golf courses, 78% have reduced the amount of water they use on all golf property, and 75% use more recycled materials than in the past.
The maintenance director and environmental consultant at the Boca Raton, Fla. property has been selected as the Overall and National Private recipient of the annual awards that recognize superintendents and their golf courses for overall excellence and best management practices. Alex Stuedemann of TPC Deere Run (Public Course) and Ken Nice of Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Resort Course) were also selected for national recognition.
Audubon Country Club in Louisville, Ky., is working with focus groups within the club to help gain different opinions on the course and property’s direction. The municipal Bobby Jones Golf Course complex in Sarasota, Fla., is also working on a master plan over the next 12 weeks, which will include short-, mid- and long-term projects and goals for the course.
The Sarasota, Fla., property will close the 18-hole golf course from May 1 through October 2017 to install a new irrigation system, restore and re-grass the greens and fairways, enhance the bunkers, do drainage work, and re-shape and level the tee complexes. The property’s Stadium Course will be open throughout the process.
A master planning firm will now be hired to begin the process of undertaking $3.5 million renovations of each of the club’s 18-hole golf courses, the first of which was designed by Donald Ross in 1925 and then dedicated by Jones. The property, described as “the largest land asset that the city owns,” will also get a new $3.5 million clubhouse and $1.5 million player development center if the plan is fully implemented.
To commemorate the Sarasota, Fla., club’s anniversary on January 22, it hosted a nine-hole golf tournament featuring hickory-shafted clubs and gutta-percha balls. Throughout the years, the club has been known by many different names, including Whitfield Country Club, Sarasota Country Club, North Shore Country Club, Sarasota Bay Country Club, and its current name, which it adopted in 1964.
A city-appointed committee found that “it’s way beyond time” to renovate the 45-hole municipal facility in Sarasota, Fla., recommending that the city hire a master planning firm to renovate the 18-hole British and American courses, create a player-development center, and build a new clubhouse.
The private Sarasota, Fla., club’s free smartphone application provides members and guests with GPS tracking while on the golf course, current weather conditions, menus, special events, and schedules for fitness classes and sports leagues. Available for Apple and Android users, the app also provides quick two-way communication with club administrators.
The 24,000-sq. ft. space at the Sarasota, Fla., club now features a lightened color palette, refinished wood floors, and new window treatments, lighting fixtures and carpeting. New dining room chairs, larger tables in the bar and grille, and new furniture for the lobby have been installed as well.
Canoe Brook CC was named 2015 Club of the Year and its Director of Golf, George Dietz II, earned the section’s Bill Strausbaugh Award. David Reasoner of The Ridgewood Country Club was named Golf Professional of the Year. For the Florida chapter, Jeff Hartigan of The Oaks Club will now serve as President.
A list compiled by the National Association of Home Builders found that only elevators were less desirable than golf courses for new home-buyers. “Just shoot me if I ever mention developing another golf-course community,” an unidentified real estate developer in Southwest Florida said.
Tom Henderson, from Round Hill Club in Greenwich, Conn., has been named the 62nd recipient of the PGA Golf Professional of the Year Award. Cameron McCormick, from Brook Hollow GC and Trinity Forrest GC in Dallas, was named the PGA Teacher of the Year.
The 24,000-sq. ft. facility in Sarasota, Fla., will receive interior design enhancements with new décor, furniture, window treatments, carpeting and artwork in the dining room, private dining room, lobby, bar and grille room.
The 233-acre Sarasota, Fla. property, located near Interstate 75, has changed hands several times since 2010. The purchase includes a 10,000-sq. ft. clubhouse.
The PGA Professional is the oldest male or female to record an ace, the eighth of his career, which took place on the 14th hole of the Lakes Course at Palm Aire Country Club in Sarasota, Fla.
