Pennsylvania Run Golf Course in Louisville, Ky., works with a group of hunters to control the geese population, which has caused safety concerns for some residents. Bide-A-Wee Golf Course in Portsmouth, Va., has hired 15 Weimaraners to chase off the geese three days a week.

The Portsmouth, Va., property is sending letters to former members to entice them back to the club, while reaching out to golfers who haven’t considered a membership. Launched in March, the program has added 83 members, 41 of which are golf, and the average age among new members has dropped by 17 years.

Golf course properties in the state are dealing with the financial hardship that comes with reduced play, as well as delays to planned course improvements from the wet and cold. Mark Lambert, golf pro at Nansemond River Golf Club in Suffolk, said it helps to look on the bright side: “In some respects, our expenses are down this year because we were closed so much. We were closed 13 days in March, which is a lot.”

The 18-hole public course in Portsmouth, Va., decided to do the regrassing to improve both maintenance and playability, after having two to three greens die each summer.
