Southern Hills CC Launches $19M Facility Renovation
The historic Tulsa, Okla., club will thoroughly renovate its Perry Maxwell-designed championship course as well as its practice facilities, including the creation of a new short-game area and a first-ever indoor teaching facility. The course will close on August 1, 2018 and reopen in June 2019. While Southern Hills has been promised its fifth PGA Championship (and eighth major) by 2030, the project is primarily designed to “keep us relevant as a premier country club for our members,” said General Manager Nick Sidorakis.
Report Says PGA Championship Will Return to Valhalla GC in 2024
A press conference is scheduled for November 16 at which it is expected to be announced that the major tournament will return to the PGA-owned Louisville, Ky. property, which last hosted the Championship in 2014. This would be the first time Valhalla would host the tournament in May, after the PGA announced earlier this year that it would be moving the Championship from its traditional August dates, starting in 2019.

In 1981, the businessman began to pursue his goal to build a world-class facility that would bring major championships to the Louisville, Ky. region. The club has hosted three PGA championships, two Senior PGAs and the 2008 Ryder Cup on its Jack Nicklaus-designed course. Valhalla GC was sold in 2000 to the PGA of America.
PGA National Resort & Spa Opens Renovated Sports & Racquet Club
The 33,000-sq. ft. facility underwent a $4 million facelift and now includes indoor racquetball and volleyball courts, two lighted pickleball/paddle ball courts and a five-lane saltwater lap pool. It will offer 75 weekly classes and activities, including belly dancing, kickboxing and rowing. An “iZone” will be provided for kids.
Herb Kohler to Receive 2016 Old Tom Morris Award
The former CEO of Kohler Co. took the home-products and design company into the golf business during his 43 years with the company, building four courses at Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits and buying resort hotel properties in St Andrews, Scotland. He will receive the award named after St Andrews’ long-time superintendent at the Golf Industry Show in San Diego next February.

Portland (Ore.) Plans Vote to Ban Smoking On Golf Courses in City Parks
Other cities in Oregon have exempted golfers from similar laws, but the ban in the state’s largest city would apply to all four of its municipal courses. Tobacco products would also be banned from being sold at the facilities, but groups renting courses for tournaments could apply for smoking permits. Portland would join a growing group of cities, including New York, San Francisco, Houston and New Orleans, that now also include golf in their smoking bans.
