The Joseph S. Garske Collegiate Grants, established in honor of the founder of Par Aide, which continues to sponsor the scholarship program, are awarded to children of club superintendents. Nine grants totaling $12,000 are awarded, based on applicants’ community service, leadership, academic performance and a written essay.
PGA to Award Five New Golf Management University Program Scholarships
The $8,000 awards, part of the PGA WORKS workforce diversification effort, will be for the 2018-19 school year at any of the 18 accredited PGA Golf Management University Programs. The deadline to apply is February 28th.

Paul Maholm, who pitched for four National League teams over a nine-year career, has joined with a local homebuilder to acquire the 98-year-old club, where he has been a member. Before leaving Mississippi State University to pursue his pro career after being drafted in the first round of the major league baseball draft in 2003, Maholm had spent three years in the school’s PGA Golf Management program. “Golf was always my fallback plan,” he says.
Scientists Identify Fungal Turfgrass Disease
Curvularia malina, which occurs on short-cut Bermuda and Zoysia grasses on southern golf courses, resembles an ink spill, causing leaves to turn dark and get mushy, though the condition clears up with drier summer weather. The team found a fungicide that can be used preventively or to treat infected areas at the time of year it is most likely to appear.

The West Point, Miss., property features a 7,500-yard, par-72 golf course and a Gil Hanse-designed practice facility that will serve the Mississippi State University golf teams with a driving range, short-game training areas, and a 6,400-sq. ft. team clubhouse. Plans for the facility also include a clubhouse and accompanying guest cabins.
Watson Fellowship Grants Include “Wedding Present” for One Turfgrass Student
Three postgraduate grants of $5,000, plus all-expenses paid trips to the Golf Industry Show, have been awarded through the fellowship funded by the Environmental Institute of Golf and The Toro Company. Newly married Philip Vines of Mississippi State University and David Jesperson and Charles Schmid of Rutgers are this year’s recipients.
