Alongside its distributor, Turf Star, the equipment manufacturer has finalized a 12-year equipment and tournament support agreement with the city and La Jolla, Calif., golf course. Upcoming events at Torrey Pines include the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open and the 2021 U.S. Open.

Redesigned by Tom Weiskopf, the project at the La Jolla, Calif., property included several infrastructure elements, including new irrigation and pumping systems; replacement of all tee boxes; greens were enlarged by 20-30%; bunkers were reduced from 60 to 42, with many relocated or reconfigured; cart paths were replaced; and the nines have been flipped.

The La Jolla, Calif., property hosted the Farmers Insurance Open over the weekend, and had to suspend the final round of play on Sunday, and keep spectators off the golf course due to conditions. Overnight, 60 mph winds knocked over as many as 20 trees, including two Torrey pines and a 75-foot eucalyptus.

The city has reported that no additional trees have died as a result of the infestation after using traps to lure and kill the bugs. Torrey Pines GC in La Jolla, Calif., was hit hard by the infestation, and the drought made trees throughout the region more susceptible.
