Prescription for Expanding Los Angeles County Courses Includes Yoga, Zumba and Frisbee
A report compiled after county supervisors questioned a proposed $7.5 million upgrade to the Lakewood (Calif.) CC course recommended opening up some of the county’s 18 facilities to include a wider range of activities. “This is big open space, and I think there’s less and less people who are actually taking the time to spend the day golfing,” one supervisor said in assessing the usage and profit picture of the country’s largest golf system of its kind.

Golf Course Enhancement Project Underway at Lakewood (Colo.) CC
Colorado’s second-oldest country club has begun the final “sprint” to complete a $1.65M renovation that was first conceived in 1994. Gil Hanse will direct the project on a course that was redesigned by Donald Ross in 1916.
Lakewood (Colo.) CC Plans $1.5M Golf Course Upgrade
The restoration, designed by Gil Hanse, is expected to begin by the end of the summer and wrap up before the end of the year. Almost half of the 122-acre golf course’s holes will be reworked in some way to bring the course more in line with the original 1916 design by Donald Ross.

Brawl at North Carolina Club Leaves One Dead, Others Seriously Injured
After receiving multiple calls reporting gunshots and a fight at the Lakewood CC clubhouse in Salemburg, N.C., Sampson County deputies responded at 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 3rd. One victim died later that day and several others suffered severe head trauma, stab and gunshot wounds. The club’s Director of Golf Operations called the incident the “unlucky” result of renting out the facility for a private party.
Rust-Oleum Championship Moving to Ivanhoe Club
The Web.com Tour event, played for its first two years at Lakewood CC in Westlake, Ohio, will now be held at the club in the northwest Chicago suburbs, near the sponsor’s corporate headquarters. A three-year agreement is in place, starting with this year’s event from June 6-12. A new event, the DAP Championship, will be played at Canterbury GC in Cleveland.
Legal Battle Brews Over Possible Rezoning at Golden Gate CC
The owner of the Naples, Fla. property, who says he’s losing $600,000 a year because of declining membership, is asking for a rezoning to be able to build condos. The county’s decision could set a precedent for ten other club properties that might want to request similar changes.
