The latest proposal for the $30 million project, which includes two golf courses overlooking Walter E. Long Lake, would reduce irrigation at other city-run golf courses to free up water.

Modeled after Torrey Pines in San Diego, the proposed facility would include two golf courses, a waterfront clubhouse overlooking Walter E. Long Lake, a driving range, corporate meeting spaces, dining, and public park amenities. Critics of the $25 million project are concerned the facility will make that portion of the city less affordable.

Parks and recreation officials in the city are supporting the idea of converting 735 acres of a park on the city’s east side into two courses, one of which would be designed by Ben Crenshaw. The plan would be to have the first course open by 2018 and to seek to draw a PGA-level tournament to the new facility.
