Two structures were a total loss while a third was damaged in an early morning blaze at the Charles Town, W.V., property on February 28. The River Hills, Wis., club suffered heavy smoke and water damage on December 22 after a Christmas tree caught fire, though the precise cause remains under investigation. The club’s kitchen will be closed for two weeks due to extensive damage from water used to extinguish the blaze. Employees were boiling butter in a pan when it overflowed, igniting a large fire that spread into the ventilation system and to the roof. The clubhouse underwent a $1.5 million renovation earlier this year.
Alpine GC Demolishes Burnt Clubhouse
During a planned restoration in April, the Comstock Park, Mich., club’s clubhouse caught fire, reportedly caused by a corroded junction box, resulting in a diminished golf season. The new 3,500-sq. ft. building, scheduled for completion in March 2014, will include seating for 55, a full restaurant and bar, pro shop offices, and a new outdoor pavilion.

The Morton Grove, Ill., golf course is estimating damage at $135,000 after what authorities believe was a “most likely intentional” fire set by a tiki torch on September 2. An early-morning fire at the Dowagiac, Mich., club destroyed a storage building and the golf carts inside, while the clubhouse, which is not connected to that building, suffered some damage. Investigators have not yet determined a cause for the blaze, but they have not ruled out arson.

Sparks from a circular saw caused the blaze at the Napa, Calif., club as workers were cutting old pipes in a back area of the property. The fire was contained within a half hour and the club remained open during the incident, with golfers continuing to play as fire engines drove onto the property.
