“We’re gaining scale and the industry has turned around,” John McConnell said in assessing the state of his 12-club portfolio.
The purchase of the 27-year-old private club in Charlotte, N.C. brings the Raleigh, N.C.-based ownership company’s total portfolio to 12 properties in the Carolinas and Tennessee. McConnell says it plans $4 million in improvements at Providence, including new fitness and activity areas and upgrades to the clubhouse and golf course.
The 89-year-old club in Knoxville, Tenn., is the first property that the management firm will operate outside of the Carolinas, and the fourth in its 11-club portfolio with a Donald Ross-designed golf course.
Under the management of McConnell Golf, the Myrtle Beach, S.C., club will eliminate a policy established in early 2011 that allowed outside play from resort guests and select hotel and golf package providers. The company looks to “restore the facility to the original intent” by returning to its private roots “in a market that is oversaturated with public courses.”
