Sweet Springs Resort in Gap Mills, W. Va., which hosted U.S. presidents and war heroes, is being sold at auction on November 12, the Associated Press reported.
Joe R. Pyle Complete Auction and Realty Service is handling the public auction.
Sweet Springs opened in the late 1700s, and a 110,000-sq. ft. hotel was completed in 1839. George Washington and Robert E. Lee were visitors. The property includes an 1830s brick bathhouse where warm mineral springs continue to bubble, the AP reported.
The state bought the property in 1941 and converted into a hospital for tuberculosis patients. It operated from 1945 until 1991 as a home for the elderly. The facility has been closed since 1993, and several auctions for the property have been held since, the AP reported.
According to the auction website, property features include approximately 23 acres, a dedicated wastewater treatment facility, 100,000 gallon holding tank at water reservoir, the fully restored Lewis Cottage and a nearby garage apartment, a bring guesthouse, a hot mineral spring pool, and mature oaks throughout. A full commercial stainless-steel kitchen and cafeteria are included as well, along with a modern laundry room, and multiple modernized buildings.
