Two St. Louis chefs are among 28 nationwide trying out for a chance to represent the United States in the 2012 International Culinary Art Exhibition, frequently referred to as the “Culinary Olympics,” in Germany, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Kevin Storm, Executive Chef at Bellerive Country Club, and Anthony Haacke, Executive Chef at the St. Louis Racquet Club, will try to earn spots on the six-person U.S. team, sponsored by the American Culinary Foundation. Their first tryout is a cold-food competition Feb. 19-21 in Elgin, Ill.
Both Storm and Haacke are members of the ACF’s Chefs de Cuisine Association of St. Louis, with Storm recently finishing a term as president and in 2004 being named the chapter’s chef of the year. Both chefs have experience on the competitive culinary circuit, serving as coaches for teams of younger cooks.
The international competition, held every four years, started in 1900 with only a handful of chefs representing four countries. Today, more than 1,500 chefs compete from 50-plus nations. U.S. chefs joined the action in 1954, and the 1960 U.S. team won the world championship with a menu of fried chicken, prime rib and stuffed baked potato.
