The Canongate Golf property in the Galveston, Texas area has completed most of the improvements for one of its three distinct nine-hole layouts and plans to complete the remaining work over the next two years, with 18 holes being kept open for member play at all times. Improvements include replacing greenside bunkers with new technology that will provide better drainage and playability.
Canongate Golf has announced that its South Shore Harbour Country Club in the Galveston, Texas area recently began a three-year, $600,000 renovation to enhance its golf facilities and the property’s surrounding landscape.
South Shore Harbour CC features a 27-hole championship course designed by Jay Riviere, Dave Marr, and Carlton Gipson. Located on the banks of Galveston Bay, the course consists of three distinct nines: South, Shore and Harbour, each playing to a par 36. Once known as a links layout void of trees with an abundance sand and a relatively flat track, the course has evolved into a more traditional course with rolling hills, water hazards and a steady wind off the bay.
The majority of work on the Harbour nine was completed last year, and the club now plans to complete nine holes per season over the next two years, leaving 18 holes open for member play throughout the project. Improvements will include renovations to tee boxes, greens and select bunkers, along with irrigation and turf enhancements. Greenside bunkers will be replaced with new PermaBunker technology that will provide better drainage and playability, Canongate said.
“Once complete, this three-year project will elevate South Shore Harbour’s playing conditions to an all-time high, making it one of the premiere clubs in the Galveston Bay area,” said General Manager Kenn Depew.
“Our team has received great feedback on the current renovations to date and is excited to start improvements on the Shore course this year,” Depew added. “We want to thank all of our members for their patience during this construction period and we are confident that they will be pleased with the end results.”
The renovation project is being managed by Sequoia Greenscapes. Up-to-date information on the renovations and planned improvements can be found at www.sshrenovation.wordpress.com or www.canongatetexas.com.
