A brutal summer has wreaked havoc on local golf courses, leading several to opt to upgrade their greens from Bentgrass to Champion Bermuda, a more durable grass that is easier to maintain, reports the Memphis Business Journal.
Low country courses including Plantation Golf Club (Memphis, Tenn.), The Links at Cottonwoods (Robinsonville, Miss.), The Links at Audubon (Memphis, Tenn.) and Mirimichi (Millington, Tenn.) have made or are making the transition from Bentgrass to Champion Bermuda, which performs better in the extreme summer heat of Memphis.
Mike Herrington, general manager and owner of Cherokee Valley Golf Club and Plantation Golf Club, says this summer has been like having “three Augusts” heat-wise; Plantation’s greens died as a result. He says a replacement of its greens was started three weeks ago. Cherokee Valley “is holding on” after work was done to relieve the heat pressure on the Bentgrass greens there, he says.
