The structure, which stored mowing equipment for the East Stroudsburg, Pa., golf course, collapsed under the weight of snow, but no injuries were reported. The club said the collapse will not affect its opening date for the 2014 season, and several area golf courses have offered their assistance to ensure that the property opens on time.
A maintenance shed collapsed on the grounds of the township-owned golf course at Country Club of the Poconos on the morning of February 19, and melting snow is being named as the culprit, the Stroudsburg (Pa.)-based Pocono Record reported.
No one was working in or around the East Stroudsburg, Pa., shed at the time of the collapse, according to township officials. The shed stored mowing equipment used at the golf course, township Supervisor Annette Atkinson told the Record.
“This is not going to affect our opening date [for the 2014 season] at all,” Atkinson said. “Fortunately it was just a storage building for equipment.”
The full extent of the damage won’t be known until the township clears the ice and snow from the site and begins removing the debris later this week. Atkinson assured residents that there were no fertilizers or chemicals kept in the building that might affect groundwater in the area, the Record reported.
Several area golf courses had seen the damaged shed and have offered their assistance, Atkinson said. “We’re grateful that neighboring golf courses have called us concerned, asking how they can help to get the course open on time.”
There are multiple township residences that have had snow-related collapses as well, Atkinson said, including one deck, one carport and one roof over a porch, the Record reported.
“I feel a little foolish. We posted something on Facebook reminding residents to clear off their decks,” Atkinson said. “This was a pitched roof, we thought it would hold.”
