Shreveport (La.) Country Club has been donated to Winner’s Circle International, a branch of the Denny Duron Evangelistic Association, and will be operated by that organization beginning in 2009. The donation comes at a time when the club is involved in legal proceedings.
According to The Shreveport Times, Shreveport Country Club Inc. filed a civil suit last week against Country Club Investors LLC, a group of officers and directors of the club. The suit maintains that Country Club Investors LLC transferred ownership to a company it now controls and kept the mineral rights for the property, which the plaintiffs say should belong to the country club corporation and its shareholders.
“I’ve been instructed by counsel not to comment on that, so I won’t,” Shreveport Country Club President Wally Netherton said in the article.
The suit would not affect the donation, Netherton added, as the club has struggled financially and with decreasing membership in recent years. “Our charter calls for us, if the club is dissolved, to give it to a charitable trust or organization,” he said, “and that’s what we’re going to do.”
Denny Duron, pastor of Shreveport Community Church and head of the evangelistic association bearing his name, has a vision for what the association’s Winner’s Circle organization will want to do with the club.
“It’s going to be a family center for ministry, as well as a community outreach,” Duron said. “It will be in the pattern of every other community center. It’s perfect for that. We’ll have something for the whole family there and make sure it place becomes a staging center for all kinds of good things for the community.
“We don’t really have youth golf, and we plan to change that,” he added. “We’re reopening the tennis center and refurbishing the 11 courts out there. We’re making sure the golf course stays in pristine condition.”
There are also plans also to revive the club’s swim team in the summer, Duron added.
