The Conway, S.C., property has been closed for a two-month renovation project that changed the look of several golf holes and improved drainage throughout the course. Course operators had hoped to reopen by late January, but rain slowed the project, which also included filling in low-lying areas and enlarging ponds.
Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club in Conway, S.C., will reopen March 7 after a two-month renovation project that has changed the look of several holes and improved drainage throughout the course, Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Sun News reported.
The 6,935-yard Clyde Johnston design that opened in 2001 features elevated bentgrass greens protected by steep greenside bunkers, and it was fairly open off most tee boxes prior to the project. Vast areas of waste bunkers that are intended to help improve drainage have been created on nine holes and tighten fairways, and they are designed to allow carts to drive through them, the News reported.
“They look fantastic,” director of operations Ryan McCarty said. “I think the waste bunkers are going to be a huge asset for us getting this place drained and the playability of it. It will be a lot more shot-placement than it ever was. It’s definitely going to be a drastic change.”
Greenside bunkers have also been renovated and have been made less severe. “All greenside bunkers have been flattened so they’re not as steep,” McCarty said. “It’s a lot more playable for the average golfer.”
The course closed in late December and course operators had hoped to reopen by late January, but rain slowed the project, which also included filling in low-lying areas and enlarging ponds, the News reported.
Renovations are complete, with the exception of a few areas, including the creation of a waste bunker on the second hole. “Hopefully we’ll just have to tidy up some areas and drop some sand in No. 2,” he said.
A grand reopening celebration will likely be held within a few weeks, the News reported.
