The Upgrades are part of a 10-year master plan that was disrupted by COVID-19. The extensive project includes a renovation and expansion of the facility’s main entry, porte-cochere, lobby and reception areas. It also includes improvements to the building’s first and second floors, construction of new office space and an expansion of the club’s Pool Grill area.
San Antonio (Texas) Country Club is set to embark on a $13 million improvements project, the San Antonio Business Journal reported.
The upgrades are part of a 10-year master plan that was disrupted by COVID-19.
The extensive project includes a renovation and expansion of the facility’s main entry, porte-cochere, lobby and reception areas, the San Antonio Business Journal reported. It also includes improvements to the building’s first and second floors, construction of new office space and an expansion of the club’s Pool Grill area.
Additional back-of-house improvements are also included in this initial work, including new restroom facilities and an expanded loading dock, the San Antonio Business Journal reported.
“This project was actually slated to start right before the pandemic hit,” San Antonio Country Club General Manager Marvin Jones said. “Right now, these are the immediate issues that need to be addressed.”
The nonprofit club reported nearly $21 million in revenue and more than $28.9 million in net assets in its 2019 tax filings, which were filed shortly after the outbreak of COVID-19 in spring 2020, the San Antonio Business Journal reported. It also reported a workforce of more than 330 employees.
The reinvestment comes as golf facilities, including those affiliated with private clubs, have seen a resurgence in play amid the pandemic.
“All the outdoor sports saw an increase in activity over the last three years and it continues to be that way,” Jones said.
San Antonio Country Club is home to an 18-hole championship golf course, and more than a dozen tennis courts. It also has a 6,500-sq.-ft. fitness center, as well as an 80,000-sq.-ft. main clubhouse and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
Several notable golfers have played the San Antonio Country Club course over the years, including Byron Nelson, Ben Crenshaw, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Kite, Babe Zaharias, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods.
The midtown club made significant improvements to its course in 2004. Jones said there may be more course upgrades in the works as part of the master plan.
Meanwhile, club management has worked to keep pace with venues like Topgolf that have captured golfers not necessarily committed to an 18-hole round. Jones said there are more course options now, including nine-hole and even three-hole groups.
“There are happy hour groups,” he said. “There’s a lot of different things that are happening to engage people in the sport of golf.”
One of the more popular outdoor sports the club has embraced is pickleball. It currently has six courts and Jones noted that his team is exploring ways it can expand that infrastructure.
“It’s introduced us to people that were really not engaged in tennis or golf and now have another activity here at the club,” Jones said.
Work on this current round of improvements is expected to take a little more than a year to complete.
