The Pacific Palisades, Calif., golf course is part of a revised bid to bring the Games to Los Angeles, replacing the previously proposed Wilson Golf Course. The International Olympic Committee will decide on a 2024 venue in September 2017, and will also vote on the long-term fate of golf in the Games.
A revised bid to bring the 2024 Olympics to the city of Los Angeles includes the possibility of Olympic golf at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., the Golf Channel reported.
An earlier bid by “L.A. 2024” included Wilson Golf Course in Griffith Park as the proposed golf venue, but according to an LA Times report, the latest proposal would include golf at Riviera Country Club. Known as “Hogan’s Alley,” Riviera has hosted the PGA Tour event now called the Genesis Open annually since 1926 and has also been the site of three major championships, most recently the 1995 PGA Championship, Golf Channel reported.
“We are honored and thrilled to be selected by L.A. 2024 for the opportunity to host the world’s greatest golfers,” Michael R. Yamaki, the club’s corporate officer, told the Times.
The chances for Los Angeles to land the Olympics in eight years were significantly upgraded Wednesday when Rome’s mayor, Virginia Raggi, failed to support the city’s bid and effectively ended its candidacy. The remaining potential host sites in addition to Los Angeles are Paris, France and Budapest, Hungary, Golf Channel reported.
The International Olympic Committee will decide on a 2024 venue in September 2017, when it will also vote on the long-term fate of golf, whose place in the Olympics has not yet been guaranteed beyond the 2020 Games in Tokyo, Golf Channel reported.
