Golfing privileges are a draw for temporary workers at the three 18-hole golf courses at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in Traverse City, Mich. However, these courses, which have no H-2B visa workers among their 45 seasonal employees, have tapped into another source of part-time help—retirees.
“The retired guys have a certain work ethic that’s fantastic,” notes Paul Galligan, Director of Golf & Grounds Maintenance.
While the majority of the seasonal workers are college students, he notes, 16 of the temporary employees are retirees.
They do not need the money, says Galligan, but they enjoy the golf benefits. They also perform all the tasks that are required of crew members such as mowing grass, changing cups and raking bunkers.
“Probably every one of them enjoys their job,” he adds.
“They enjoy being here, and we enjoy having them.”
