The Greensboro, N.C., club closed earlier this week when its management company, ES2 Sports & Leisure, filed for bankruptcy, and there is no clear indication of when the facility will reopen. Attorney Charles Ivey III, the trustee in ES2’s bankruptcy case, filed an emergency motion asking the court to allow the course to be opened, as the property is “at its most critical and sensitive stage” in the spring and requires maintenance.
A planned re-opening of Proehlific Club at Forest Oaks in Greensboro, N.C., on April 17 has been delayed pending an approval by the judge overseeing the bankruptcy case of the country club’s former operator, the Greensboro-based Triad Business Journal reported.
Members and employees stopped by to check the status of the country club, which was closed Tuesday as its operator, ES2 Sports & Leisure of Raleigh, filed for bankruptcy, the Business Journal reported.
C&RB reported on the club’s closure earlier this week (“Forest Oaks CC Closure “Very Upsetting”).
Attorney Charles Ivey III, the trustee in ES2’s bankruptcy case, filed an emergency motion Thursday asking the court to allow the course to be opened so that crews could maintain the course, the Business Journal reported.
“The emergency relief requested herein is necessary under the circumstances, given that it arrives in the early spring—a time when the golf course (or any golf course for that matter) is at its most critical and sensitive stage,” Ivey wrote in the motion. “During the spring season, the golf course must be properly maintained on a daily basis.”
A hearing on the motion has been set for April 29. The motion gives no clear indication of when the facilities and course might reopen to members for their use, noting only that the course owner, Forest Oaks Country Club Inc., an entity of Tokyo-based Nisshin Corp., hopes to restart operations “as soon as reasonably possible,” the Business Journal reported.
Nisshin Corp. has already tapped a golf management team to assist with the work of re-opening and operating the club, though Peter Porcino, an attorney representing the owner, said a formal agreement with the firm has not yet been finalized, the Business Journal reported.
“We have brought in some golf course management people on an interim, informal basis, with a handshake and an agreement to discuss how to formalize arrangements,” Porcino said.
When it reopens, it’s unclear at this point what the country club will be called. Upon assuming management of the club last spring, ES2 changed its name to Proehlific Club at Forest Oaks, a name arrived at through a licensing agreement with retired NFL player Ricky Proehl’s Proehlific Park in Greensboro, the Business Journal reported.
Norman Klick Jr., an attorney for Proehlific Park, said Wednesday that the name could continue to be used going forward, but no details had been worked out, the Business Journal reported.
However, a large mat at the entrance to the clubhouse with the name “Proehlific Club at Forest Oaks” that was in place on Tuesday has now been removed, the Business Journal reported.
