With other area golf courses closed due to flooding, the Janesville, Minn., property is taking the opportunity to poach members. The facility plans to reduce membership fees by up to 15% and offer incentives to members who refer friends, and has recently added an enhanced menu and received a liquor license.
While a summer full of rain was a nightmare for some golf courses, Scott Allen, Manager of Prairie Ridge Golf Course believes it could be a boon for Janesville, Minn., the Waseca, Minn., Janesville Argus reported.
Allen told the City Council on November 14 that he’s using the hand Mother Nature dealt to encourage area golfers to become members at Prairie Ridge, the Argus reported.
“We’ve been talking to members from other facilities to flip to our side,” he said, noting that other area courses closed for weeks due to flooding from heavy late September rain. “We’ve come up with an aggressive plan to steal them.”
Allen is looking at reducing membership fees by 10% to 15%, and considering offering incentives to members who refer friends purchasing a membership at the city-owned club, the Argus reported.
As the course approached its 20th anniversary in 2015, the council considered leasing the property in an effort to shed its continual losses. But the council decided instead to partner with the Janesville Area Golf Association and come up with creative ways to attract golfers and boost revenue. This season they added an enhanced menu, a small fryer and with a liquor license, a wider selection of alcoholic beverages, the Argus reported.
Prairie Ridge’s annual membership drive begins next month. A draft 2017 budget is expected to be presented at the council’s November 29 meeting, the Argus reported.
