The sale of the Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., property, which includes a golf course designed by Ed Seay, tennis courts, pool, and clubhouse, was finalized on January 29 and the new operations staff, led by former PGA Tour player Mike Miles, took over on February 1. The new management team said it will evaluate the property and “right the ship.”
The Ponte Vedra Golf and Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., has been sold to Alta Mar Holdings LLC, the Jacksonville-based Florida Times-Union reported.
Formerly named Oakbridge and the first golf course to be constructed within what is now the TPC Sawgrass community, the sale was finalized on January 29 and the new operations staff, led by former PGA Tour player Mike Miles, took over on February 1. The course will remain open from Tuesday-Sunday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Times-Union reported.
In an email sent to club members, the new management team said it would take time to evaluate the property, which includes the golf course designed by Ed Seay, tennis courts, a pool and the clubhouse. The email said the facilities “suffered from neglect for many, many years” and vowed to “right the ship,” the Times-Union reported.
“Right now, we’re concentrating on the normal maintenance practices for this time of year,” Miles said. “You can’t really start anything extensive while the grass is dormant but you can do the stuff that everyone does, but hasn’t been done here.”
Miles was most recently on the staff of the Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, Calif., the Times-Union reported.
“The members I’ve met are very excited and optimistic about the future,” Miles said.
The original nine-hole layout, built in 1973, was called Thousand Oaks. When another nine holes were added, it became the Oakbridge Golf Club and was later changed to its current name, the Times-Union reported.
In recent years, rumors swirled about the ownership situation. They included the possibility that the PGA Tour would buy the club and upgrade it but the Tour denied that in late 2014. The golf club and tennis club had been owned by Jamey Golf LLC. The purchase price wasn’t immediately known because the sale hasn’t yet been filed with St. Johns County, the Times-Union reported.
