A group led by the pro golfer is purchasing the Chandler, Ariz., property, though the deal has not yet closed and the price has not been disclosed. The property features 27 holes of golf surrounded by man-made lakes, and will be the eighth golf course in the state owned by the group.
A group led by pro golfer Phil Mickelson is buying Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz., with its 27 holes surrounded by man-made lakes, the Phoenix-based Arizona Republic reported.
Mickelson is purchasing the links with his long-time coach and agent Steve Loy, his brother, former ASU golf coach Tim Mickelson, and well-known Valley developer Spike Lawrence. The deal for the Valley course hasn’t closed, and the price isn’t being disclosed yet, the Republic reported.
“This will be our eighth course in Arizona,” said Loy, who was Mickelson’s coach at Arizona State University. “We are hoping to close on Ocotillo very soon. It’s a great course, and it will be an honor to own it.”
A recent study from the University of Arizona and the golf industry shows the sport brought in $4 billion in revenue to the state in 2014. There are more than 200 golf courses in metro Phoenix alone.
Loy and Mickelson, who just completed his 28th consecutive Phoenix Open, also own the McDowell Mountain Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., and the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz. Outside the Valley in Arizona, the partners own the Golf Club at Chaparral Pines and the Rim Golf Club in Payson, Ariz., as well as the Stone Canyon Club in Oro Valley, Ariz., the Republic reported.
“When I heard Ocotillo’s owners were ready to sell, I went straight to Phil and Steve,” said Lawrence, who lives on the course just a few homes away from its long-time owners Deborah and Bernard Hoogestraat. He called the course a “South Chandler jewel.”
