This year’s Honda Classic features a PGA Tour-wide change in cell phone policy.
After experimentally allowing fans to bring their mobile phones to the Wyndham Championship, Farmers Insurance Open and three other events, the PGA Tour has gathered sufficient evidence to allow fans going forward to bring their mobile devices to tour events.
The new, permanent policy will go into effect in March at the Honda Classic, according to a tour announcement earlier this month. The tournament will be played from February 28 through March 6.
Fans will be able to bring in their phones and use them, provided they remain on silent or vibrate mode. Areas to make phone calls, check texts and email will be designated at tournament sites.
“We understand that mobile devices are an important part of everyday life,” said Andy Pazder, PGA Tour chief of operations, in a statement. “We concluded after the five test tournaments, that allowing mobile devices on-site at TOUR events was a tremendous fan enhancement, allowing them to stay connected to business and family. We anticipate our fans will be respectful of the policy and as a result the integrity of our competitions will not be compromised.”
The tour noted that photography will only be allowed during practice rounds and their restriction on videography at any time is still in place. Each PGA Tour event will have to get approval to implement the policy at their event.
As for the four majors, since they are not PGA Tour co-sponsored events, they will each develop or maintain their own mobile phone policy.
